What Is Your Motivation?

If you find yourself in a confrontation of any kind with anyone, be it a family member or stranger, before reacting ask yourself, "Is what I am about to say motivated by my need to be right, or my desire to be kind?" Then pick a response that stems from kindness, regardless of how your ego objects.

"Rocky Road" By Rose Kent (Minor Deaf Character)

Ice cream warms the heart, no matter what the weather.

That's the Dobson family motto. Whenever things get tough, they break out the special heart-shaped bowls and make sundaes. The road has been especially rocky lately for Tess and her deaf little brother, Jordan. Their plucky Texan mother talks big, but her get-rich-quick business schemes have only landed them in serious financial hot water.

Ma's newest idea is drastic. She abruptly moves the family to snowy Schenectady, New York, where she will use the last of their savings to open her dream business: an ice cream shop. (Too bad the only place she could find an apartment is in a senior citizens' complex.) Tess wants to be excited about this plan, but life in Schenectady is full of new worries. Who will buy ice cream in their shop's run-down neighborhood? What will happen when their money runs out? Worst of all is Ma herself-she's famous for her boundless energy and grandiose ideas, but only Tess and Jordan know about the dark days when she crashes and can't get out of bed. And Tess can't seem to find the right words to talk to Ma about it.

This moving story of family, community, and ice cream proves that with a little help from the people around us, life really can be sweet-and a little nutty-just like Rocky Road.(less)

Tribute To Stephen Pink (Pioneering Deaf Filmmaker)

When I found out yesterday morning that Stephen Pink had passed away over the Bank Holiday weekend, I was shocked and saddened. This is a tragedy for anyone involved in Deaf media in the UK.

From 1965-1967, he made a full-length film in BSL called ‘The Return of Dracula’ in which he starred as Dracula, directed, made the props, built the set and did just about any other job involved in the film.
It took him 2 years to complete and was shot on 8mm film. He waited for a foggy night to rush out and film the real fog to create the eerie atmosphere of Dracula! Amazing.

THIS IS NORMAL is about a young deaf* woman named Gwen who undergoes an experimental medical procedure that is supposed to "cure" her of her deafness and give her the ability to hear. Despite the controversy, Gwen risks her friends, culture, and identity to discover the answer to the question, "Is it worth giving up who you've BEEN for the 'maybe' you could BECOME?"

Written/Directed by: Justin Giddings & Ryan Welsh
Starring: Ryann Turner, Russell Harvard, Molly Burnett, Lexi Marman, Amy Lyndon, Michael Anthony Spady, Perry Thomas and Jamie Elvey

FACEBOOK: http://www.Facebook.com/ThisIsNormalA...
TWITTER: http://www.Twitter.com/ThisIsNormalMOV

*To our Deaf audience: we chose "deaf" over "Deaf" because Gwen does not self-identify with the Deaf culture due to her mainstreaming/oralist upbringing. Part of the film is exploring the conflict of embracing a Deaf identity or abandoning it completely.

Video: Beyond Essays

I am deciding to do a #ThrowabackThursday video! "Beyond Essays." Directed it in 2010. Starring Kalen Feeney & Amber Zionwith Antoinette Abbamonte. Amazing cast. Loved working with everyone in this group.

A deaf activist student, Wanda Macy, [Kalen Feeney] simply tries to get a passing grade so she can graduate from college, in spite of her malicious adversary, her English professor, Genevive Taylor, [Amber Zion] who only cares about winning a Distinguished Faculty of the Year award. Is there more to this relationship than we think?
A short film in American Sign Language-- Subtitled in English for access.
Created by a chiefly female crew and with an entire deaf cast, this film is the first in its unique process of the writer creating all the lines in American Sign Language and giving the lines to the actors, instead of having them translate the English dialogue into ASL, for the sake of preserving the acting process and allowing the actors to build around the lines, instead of creating their own.

Deaf Nursing Student Wins ADA Case

Deaf nursing student wins ADA case

A Missouri jury is siding with a deaf woman in her lawsuit against the Cox College of Nursing in Springfield. The school refused to allow Jessica Wells to complete her nursing classes because she is deaf and Wells claimed that was a violation of ADA law. Wells was removed from the program before starting her third semester. Cox College said the decision was based on safety issues. Cox won the original case, but an appeals court sided with Wells. The The jury awarded her $50,000. No word on whether the school will appeal the decision. Read more on the story--including a statement from the school at the News-Leader here.
