Help Us Protect The Future For Deaf Students

I risk being accused of bragging here, but in my lifetime I have managed to complete not one but three degrees – a BSc, a PGCE and an MA. I could not have completed any of them without Disabled Student Allowances (DSAs). This is government funding that disabled students can apply for to pay for equipment and support costs at university. [ 860 more words. ]

Flanagan Is Deaf & Dreams Of The Big-Leagues

Flanagan, who grew up in Framingham, Mass., wasn’t selected in the major league draft in June but that hasn’t stopped him.
“Being deaf isn’t really a challenge. In a lot of ways it’s an advantage. You feel like you don’t have to handle any junk or noise that can get in your head. I can have a good night’s sleep. It’s not really different. It’s just that you don’t use your spoken voice.”
Flanagan was born without hearing but it hasn't stopped him from working to reach the majors. Not one bit.

New research headed up by a Dalhousie University neuroscientist gives credence and stature to the importance of ASL and proves scientifically that ASL is a language. “Over the years, signers and the Deaf community have had to fight to have their language recognized as a real language…our research adds to the overwhelming evidence that sign languages are linguistically structured and treated by the brain like spoken languages.”
American Sign Language or even simple gestures are processed by deaf people in the part of the brain that is used for spoken language, says international...

Hello friends,
